THE STORY OF THE SOURASHTRAS - Book Review

Ever since this book arrived in our home, I've practically turned into Jyotika from Chandramukhi! Just as she would excitedly open the jewelry box to showcase each piece to the Superstar with glowing eyes—"Nethichutti, aram, ottiyanam"—it has become second nature for me to flip through these pages for every guest who visits, marveling and sharing highlights:

• Venkataramana Bhagavathar is from your hometown; have you seen his house?!

• There is a historical reference to us in a Madhya Pradesh inscription!

• Did you know it was our community that introduced M.S. Subbulakshmi to cinema as a playback singer?!

• Did you know the sole woman entrepreneur supplying garments to major establishments across Tamil Nadu belongs to our community?!

My mind once harbored questions like: "How many books about our history have already been published—what is the point of another, especially one at this price point? Is this book intended exclusively for the upper echelons of society?"

Yet, why did I purchase it? For my children. In the future, they can use this as a reference to answer questions that arise in their minds or that others pose about our heritage, or they can simply read it themselves.

Within just a few pages of beginning the book, all my skepticism vanished. The reason? The sheer quality of the publication!

Visually striking color photographs, humorous yet thought-provoking cartoons, exact copies of documents preserved in Sourashtra sabhas, prose woven with simple yet elegant vocabulary, and QR codes that seamlessly link to supplementary YouTube videos. Most notably, the clever cartoons depicting the authors engaging in time travel completely won me over—it felt like a truly brilliant concept!

The authors, Anitha Rajarajan and Biswajit Balasubramanian, begin by sharing the genesis of their project and meticulously trace our migration history backed by verifiable evidence.

Across the 19 chapters of this 300-page volume, after filling us with awe at the multifaceted legacy of our people—who excelled in art, literature, language, education, spirituality, the freedom struggle, and social service—they introduce contemporary achievers across diverse fields to sustain our engagement.

You might ask, "Aren't the stories of our ancient past merely mythic or fictional? Why revisit them repeatedly?"

You need not. Instead, you can simply explore the pivotal events that unfolded after we settled in Tamil Nadu!

You might counter, "L.K. Thulasiram, N.M.R. Subbaraman (Madurai Gandhi), and T.M.S.—aren't these the familiar names everyone knows?" Indeed, but there are countless others equally deserving of recognition. Read the book, and you will discover them.

Furthermore, you can learn about the organizations that unite our community today—their achievements, the challenges they navigate, and the perspectives of our youth settled across the globe.

You might wonder, "Doesn't all of this circulate on WhatsApp anyway?" But we must acknowledge the reality that news arriving via social media vanishes with the wind just as swiftly as it appears.

In the concluding sections, the authors document fascinating behind-the-scenes insights: their fieldwork journeys, the individuals they sought out and interviewed, their interactive experiences, and their personal reflections.

Released last December in a coffee table book format, The Story of the Sourashtras has received endorsements from prominent figures through forewords and prefaces—testaments that undoubtedly elevate its prestige.

Are there shortcomings? The dense and expansive chapters can occasionally induce a sense of fatigue, but it is vital to remember that this is certainly not a volume intended to be rushed through in a single sitting.

If your circumstances permit, I strongly encourage you to purchase this book, read it with immense pride, display it prominently on your coffee table, and gift it boldly to your friends—you will undoubtedly cherish it!

Postscript: The authors have announced plans to translate this work into Tamil to engage a wider readership, publish it across digital platforms, and compile a second volume utilizing the wealth of collected research that could not fit into this initial edition.
